The unpredictable nature of weather may affect the timeline for pool construction projects. Wind, a late season dusting of snow, a springtime shower, or an afternoon thunderstorm in the heat of summer could change the long-range forecast for your pool’s completion date.

The Dampening Effects of Rain on a Pool Construction Project
Clouds and rain cause delays. One might assume that a sunny afternoon following a morning shower would be an opportune time to dig into the ground, but this is far from true. A single day of rain may result in a delay of many days. Add some clouds and wind to the mix, and even more time may be required to proceed with the project safely.
Our team considers a variety of circumstances during all phases of construction:
1. The Physical Terrain and Moisture Levels At the Site Must Be Evaluated
A delay of days or weeks may have to occur at some locations after a rain event. This is especially true for sites with elevations lower than the surrounding property, such as a pool project taking place on a slightly lower ridge behind a home. An important part of the pool-building process involves carefully inspecting the terrain and assessing these concerns in advance.
2. Past Precipitation Rates
Rain or melting snow seeps into the soil. If crews resume work, any additional rain may bring the project to a halt because the combination of new moisture with that already in the ground has the potential to destabilize the foundation or trap even more water in the “open hole” of the ground at the worst possible time.
3. The Type of Soil the Pool Is Being Built On
Different soils dry differently. Sandy soils take less time to dry than clay-based ones. The natural composition of clay retains moisture for a longer period of time. A well-designed pool construction project includes an evaluation of the mix of clay, sand, silt, and loam soils at the desired location.
4. The Type of Equipment Being Used
Excavators and other heavy equipment need a firm base. Attempting to move this equipment through soggy soil may damage nearby landscaping, undermine adjacent foundations such as concrete patios and brick pavers, and create deep ruts in the muddy ground.
5. The Amount of Moisture In the Excavation Site and Construction Site
Keeping the excavation and construction site dry is essential until the pool is ready for use. If excessive water gets into an “open hole” during the digging process, a separate team may have to come onsite to drain the water before it accumulates. If left standing, it may take weeks to dry sufficiently for the next phase of construction to continue. In some situations, excessive water in the excavation site may also cause the walls to collapse.
6. What Nearby Structures Are Near the Pool Construction Site
Nearby structures may impact the project. For pools built in small backyards, the landscape layout and architecture of adjacent structures have a strong impact on construction projects. Paths and patios may inadvertently channel moisture to the nearby ground where you plan to build the pool. The angle of your home’s roof may also have an impact: if a roof lacks gutters or if the drain spouts direct rain from your roof to an area near the site, the ground will remain too moist for too long.
7. The Amount of Wind During Construction
Winds also have an effect on timelines. Gusty winds during rainstorms may create messy sludge. Even after the solid pool shell has been installed, crews may have to delay the plaster finishing process to prevent dirt, debris, and leaves from impacting the fresh application of the finish. Excessive winds may also cause “check cracks” which are small flaws in the plaster material that result if it dries too quickly.
8. Are Tarps and Flashing Needed?
During lighter rains, crews may cover sections of the work area with tarps and weights strategically placed atop them. Flashing is another preemptive measure that may be used when heavy rain is predicted in a forecast. Flashing involves the spraying of a thin layer of shotcrete or gunite inside the “open hole” so the soil remains firmly in place and the walls do not collapse.
